Description

Carbon dioxide (CAS 124-38-9), also known as CO2, E290, R 744, and dry ice in its solid form, is an inorganic gas produced through combustion, fermentation, and industrial synthesis. It is classified under EC 204-696-9 and carries the HS code 28112100.

In carbonated beverages, CO2 dissolves under pressure to form carbonic acid, lowering pH and delivering characteristic effervescence. In water treatment, it replaces mineral acids for pH correction, reacting with hydroxide ions without introducing chloride or sulfate residues. In modified atmosphere packaging, it inhibits microbial growth by suppressing aerobic respiration.

Carbon dioxide is available in food-grade (E290), pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur.), and technical-grade specifications, supplied as a compressed gas in cylinders or as liquefied bulk. It complies with REACH regulation and FCC standards where applicable. Procurement in Europe typically follows EN 13900 or equivalent purity specifications.
