Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC) is a water-soluble cellulose derivative identified by CAS 9004-32-4 and approved as food additive E466. It is commercially available under designations including CMC 7H, CMC 7M, CMC 7L, and S75M, and is registered under EC number 618-378-6.
In pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing, CMC acts as a binder and disintegrant by absorbing water and swelling to control release profiles.
