Description

Carmine (CAS 1390-65-4, EC 215-724-4) is a natural red colorant derived from the dried bodies of the cochineal insect, Dactylopius coccus. It is commercially identified as CI 75470 and sold under trade names including CC 1000WS and Alum Lake. It is not assigned an E-number as a standalone ingredient in EU food applications.

In food and beverage manufacturing, carmine imparts stable red-to-purple hues across a pH range of 4 to 7, making it suitable for dairy products, confectionery, and meat preparations. In cosmetics, it functions as a pigment in lipsticks and blushers, where its light-fastness and resistance to oxidation maintain colour integrity over product shelf life.

Carmine is supplied as a water-soluble grade (CC 1000WS) and as aluminium lake forms for oil-based or pressed formulations. It falls under REACH registration requirements and must comply with EU Regulation 1333/2008 when used in food applications. Standard packaging is available in fibre drums and multi-layer bags.
