Cetearyl alcohol

Cetearyl alcohol (CAS 8005-44-5, EC 267-008-6) is a fatty alcohol blend of C16 and C18 chain alcohols, commercially available under trade names including NAA 45, Adol 66, Barolub LOH, and DEHYQUART D. It carries no E-code designation and is distinct from ethoxylated variants despite the shared naming convention.

In emulsion-based formulations such as creams, lotions, and pharmaceutical topical preparations, cetearyl alcohol functions as an emulsion stabiliser and co-emulsifier by reinforcing the interfacial film between oil and water phases. It also builds viscosity and modifies texture through the formation of lamellar gel networks within the continuous phase.

Cetearyl alcohol is sourced in both cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades, with Ph.Eur. and USP/NF compliance available for regulated applications. It is subject to REACH registration and is typically supplied in flake or pastille form in bags or bulk. Buyers should confirm grade specification against intended application requirements.
