Chlorhexidine

Chlorhexidine (CAS 55-56-1) is a synthetic bisbiguanide antimicrobial compound, commercially known under trade names including Nolvasan, Soretol, and Chlorohex. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified under the amine chemical family with molecular formula C22H30Cl2N10.

In pharmaceutical and personal care formulations, chlorhexidine functions by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, making it a primary active in antiseptic mouthwashes, surgical scrubs, and wound care products. In water treatment, it controls microbial growth in process water systems by binding to negatively charged bacterial surfaces and preventing replication.

Chlorhexidine is supplied as a neat solid and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. It is referenced in Ph.Eur. monographs for pharmaceutical-grade applications and must comply with relevant biocidal product regulations under BPR (EU) 528/2012.
