Description

Chloropicrin (CAS 76-06-2) is a halogenated nitro compound used as a soil fumigant and biocidal agent. It is commercially known under trade names including Picfume, Larvacide, Acquinite, Microlysin, and G 25. No E-code designation applies to this substance.

In agriculture, chloropicrin functions as a pre-plant soil fumigant, penetrating soil pores to eliminate fungal pathogens, nematodes, and soil-borne pests through cellular oxidation of thiol groups in target organisms. It is also used as a warning agent blended with methyl bromide fumigants, providing a detectable lachrymatory signal to indicate fumigant presence during grain and commodity storage treatments.

Chloropicrin is supplied as a technical-grade liquid and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the European Union. Handling and transport are governed by strict ADR classifications due to its acute toxicity and lachrymatory properties. Procurement enquiries should confirm regional authorisation status, as biocidal product approvals vary by member state.
