Description
Chromic acid (CAS 7738-94-5, EC 231-801-5, formula CrH2O4) is an inorganic chromium(VI) compound also referred to as H2CrO4 or chromic(VI) acid. It carries no assigned E-code and is distinct from chromium trioxide, though the two are closely related in industrial practice.
In metal finishing and mining operations, chromic acid acts as an oxidising agent that etches and passivates metal surfaces, creating a corrosion-resistant oxide layer through controlled electrochemical reaction. In textile and leather processing, it functions as a bleaching and surface-modification agent, breaking down organic chromophores and altering fibre structure to improve dye uptake and uniformity.
Chromic acid is subject to REACH regulation as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) under Annex XIV, requiring authorisation for use within the EU. It is available in technical and industrial grades, supplied as dark crystalline flakes or concentrated aqueous solution, with packaging formats typically including UN-approved drums and intermediate bulk containers.
