Description
Cobalt(II) carbonate, also known as cobaltous carbonate or cobalt carbonate (CAS 513-79-1, EC 208-169-4), is an inorganic cobalt salt supplied as a violet powder. It carries no assigned E-code and is not classified as a food additive. The molecular formula is CH2O3.Co.
In mining and hydrometallurgy, cobalt carbonate serves as a precursor for cobalt recovery, decomposing under heat to yield cobalt oxide for further refining. In coatings and adhesives, it functions as a drier catalyst, accelerating oxidative crosslinking of alkyd resins. Water treatment formulators use its buffering capacity to stabilise pH in process streams.
Cobalt carbonate is available in technical and reagent grades and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Procurement teams should verify supplier Safety Data Sheets for classification under CLP Regulation, as cobalt compounds carry specific hazard designations. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk quantities on request.
