Cobalt(II) oxide

Cobalt(II) oxide, also known as cobaltous oxide or cobalt monoxide (CAS 1307-96-6, EC 215-154-6), is an inorganic compound with the formula CoO. It carries no E-code designation and is commercially supplied as a black powder used across industrial and specialty chemical applications.

In coatings and adhesives, cobalt(II) oxide functions as a drier catalyst, accelerating oxidative crosslinking of alkyd resins by facilitating oxygen transfer. In textile and paper processing, it acts as a colorant and surface modifier, where cobalt ions interact with substrate chemistry to produce stable blue-grey tones and influence surface wetting behaviour.

Cobalt(II) oxide is supplied under REACH registration and is subject to SVHC candidate list monitoring given its cobalt content. Industrial grades are available as fine black powder, typically packaged in sealed drums or multi-layer bags.
