Description
Cobalt(II) sulfate, also referred to as CoSO4 or cobaltmonosulfate, is an inorganic cobalt salt with CAS 10124-43-3 and EC number 233-334-2. It carries no assigned E-code. The compound is commercially available in anhydrous and hydrated forms, with the heptahydrate being the most common industrial grade.
In battery manufacturing and electroplating, cobalt sulfate serves as a cobalt ion source, depositing cobalt onto substrate surfaces through controlled electrochemical reduction. In agriculture, it corrects cobalt deficiency in livestock feed, where cobalt is required for vitamin B12 synthesis. It also functions as a catalyst in certain oxidation reactions within chemical processing.
Cobalt sulfate is supplied in technical and feed-grade specifications and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. It is classified as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) under REACH due to carcinogenicity, which governs its handling and downstream use conditions. Packaging typically ranges from 25 kg bags to bulk quantities.
