Description
Cobalt Octoate (CAS 136-52-7) is an organometallic cobalt salt of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, supplied as a liquid and commonly referenced by trade names including CO 12, NL 49P, and Versneller NL 49. It carries no assigned E-code and is catalogued under EC number 205-250-6.
In alkyd-based coatings and printing inks, Cobalt Octoate functions as a primary drier, accelerating oxidative crosslinking of unsaturated fatty acid chains by catalysing oxygen absorption at the film surface. It is also used in unsaturated polyester systems as a polymerisation promoter, activating peroxide initiators to trigger curing at ambient temperature.
