In antifouling coatings for marine vessels, cuprous oxide releases copper ions that disrupt cell membranes of barnacles and algae, preventing hull biofouling. In agriculture, it functions as a fungicide and bactericide by generating reactive copper species that interfere with microbial enzyme systems. Personal care formulators also incorporate it as a skin-conditioning colorant at controlled concentrations.
