Description

Cyclamic acid (CAS 100-88-9), also known as cyclohexylsulfamic acid, hexamic acid, or cyclamate, is a synthetic sulfonated amino acid with approximately 30 to 40 times the sweetness of sucrose. It does not carry an E-number in the European Union, where its use as a food additive remains prohibited under current legislation.

In pharmaceutical formulations, cyclamic acid functions as a taste-masking acidulant in oral liquid preparations, suppressing bitterness through competitive receptor interaction rather than simple dilution. It is also used in combination sweetener systems for tabletop sweeteners and dietary products in markets where regulatory approval applies, such as Canada and parts of Asia.

Cyclamic acid is available in technical and food-grade forms, with quality specifications aligned to FCC and Ph.Eur. standards depending on the intended application. It is subject to REACH registration requirements for supply within the EU. Packaging is typically offered in 25 kg bags or fiber drums.
