Description

D-Maltitol (CAS 585-88-6) is a sugar alcohol derived from maltose, commercially available under trade names including Mabit and Malbit. It carries no E-number designation in the EU but is recognised as a bulk sweetener and polyol across food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications.

In food and pharmaceutical formulations, maltitol functions as a low-glycaemic sugar substitute, providing approximately 90% of sucrose sweetness while reducing caloric contribution. In personal care, it acts as a humectant by binding water molecules within the formulation matrix, and as a skin conditioner and protectant in topical products. Its chelating activity also helps stabilise formulations against metal ion interference.

D-Maltitol is supplied as a white crystalline powder meeting FCC, Ph.Eur., and JECFA specifications, with REACH compliance applicable for EU trade. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags, with bulk options available depending on grade. Both food-grade and cosmetic-grade material can be sourced under HS code 29400090.
