Description

D-Mannitol (CAS 69-65-8), also known as Mannite and approved as food additive E421, is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol found in plants and fungi. It carries the EC number 200-711-8 and molecular formula C6H14O6, and is commercially produced through hydrogenation of fructose or mannose.

In pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing, D-Mannitol functions as a direct-compression excipient and diluent, providing a cool mouthfeel and low hygroscopicity that protects moisture-sensitive active ingredients. In personal care formulations, it acts as a humectant by binding water molecules within the skin matrix, and as a chelator that sequesters metal ions to stabilise product systems.

D-Mannitol is available in pharmaceutical grade (Ph.Eur., USP/NF), food grade (FCC, E421), and cosmetic grade forms. It is supplied as a crystalline powder under REACH compliance and is typically offered in 25 kg bags or bulk quantities. Relevant HS code for import classification is 2905.43.00.
