Description

D-Sorbitol (CAS 50-70-4) is a six-carbon sugar alcohol derived from glucose, registered as E420 under EU food additive legislation. It is commercially available under trade names including Sorbol, KARION, and Sionon, and is classified under HS code 29054491 for customs purposes.

In food manufacturing, D-Sorbitol functions as a humectant by binding free water molecules, reducing water activity and extending shelf life in baked goods and confectionery. In personal care formulations, it stabilises emulsions and conditions skin by maintaining moisture balance at the stratum corneum level. It also acts as a chelating agent, sequestering metal ions that would otherwise catalyse oxidative degradation.

D-Sorbitol is supplied in both crystalline powder and liquid form, with grades conforming to Ph.Eur., FCC, and USP standards. It holds E420 status under EU Regulation 1333/2008 and is registered under REACH. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags for powder and IBC containers for liquid grades.
