Description

D-Xylose (CAS 58-86-6, EC 200-400-7, formula C5H10O5) is a naturally occurring pentose monosaccharide derived primarily from hemicellulose hydrolysis of plant materials such as corncobs and birch wood. It carries no assigned E-code in the EU. Common abbreviations include D-Xyl and Xyl.

In food and nutrition, D-Xylose serves as a low-calorie sweetener and participates in Maillard browning reactions, making it functional in flavour development applications. In personal care formulations, it acts as a humectant by binding water within the skin matrix and functions as an antioxidant co-ingredient to stabilise sensitive actives against oxidative degradation.

D-Xylose is available in fine crystalline powder form meeting FCC and food-grade specifications, with pharmaceutical grades conforming to Ph.Eur. standards where required. The product is registered under REACH (EC 200-400-7) and classified under HS code 29400090 for import and export purposes across EU member states.
