Description

Sodium dehydroacetate (CAS 4418-26-2) is the sodium salt form of dehydroacetic acid, commonly abbreviated as DHA-sodium or DHN and sold under trade names including Harven. It carries no E-number designation in the EU but is recognised as a preservative active in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications.

In personal care formulations, sodium dehydroacetate inhibits fungal and bacterial growth by disrupting cellular enzyme activity, typically at concentrations of 0.1–0.6%. In food processing, it extends shelf life in baked goods and margarines by suppressing mould development, while also functioning as a flavour modifier in select applications.

Sodium dehydroacetate is supplied as a white to yellowish powder in food-grade and cosmetic-grade specifications, with compliance available against FCC and REACH requirements. It is classified under HS code 29322980 and is typically offered in 25 kg bags or fibre drums from European stock.
