Denatonium benzoate

Denatonium benzoate (CAS 3734-33-6), sold commercially as BITREX and THS 839, is a quaternary ammonium salt recognised as the most bitter substance known, used in trace concentrations to render products unpalatable and prevent accidental ingestion. In personal care and pharmaceutical formulations, denatonium benzoate functions as a bittering agent in alcohol denaturants, nail-biting deterrents, and child-resistant coatings, where concentrations as low as 10 ppm activate bitter taste receptors to discourage consumption.
