Description

Dialdehyde starch (DAS, CAS 9047-50-1) is a chemically modified starch produced by periodate oxidation of native starch, introducing reactive aldehyde groups along the polymer backbone. It is commercially available under trade names including Sumstar, Sumstar 150, Sumstar 190, Formamyl, and Polydialdehyde. No E-code designation applies.

In paper and pulp manufacturing, DAS functions as a wet-strength agent by forming covalent crosslinks with cellulose fibres and protein-based binders, improving dimensional stability under moisture. In leather processing, its aldehyde groups react with collagen amino groups to achieve tanning and fibre consolidation without heavy metals. Agricultural applications exploit its controlled-release behaviour when used as a binder matrix for fertiliser granules.

DAS is supplied as a solid in standard industrial grades differentiated by oxidation degree, including Sumstar 150 and 190. It falls under REACH registration obligations within the EU. Procurement teams should confirm grade-specific oxidation percentage and moisture content specifications directly with the supplier.
