Dibutyl maleate

Dibutyl maleate (DBM), also known as di-n-butyl maleate or maleic acid dibutyl ester, is a diester formed from maleic acid and n-butanol. It carries CAS number 105-76-0 and EC number 203-328-4. No E-code designation applies to this substance.

In polymer and coatings manufacturing, DBM functions as a reactive monomer that copolymerizes with vinyl acetate, acrylates, and styrene to modify chain flexibility and lower glass transition temperature. In personal care formulations, it acts as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent, forming a light occlusive layer that reduces transepidermal moisture loss.
