Dichlorodifluoromethane

Dichlorodifluoromethane, commercially known as Freon 12, Genetron 12, Frigen 12, Arcton 6, and Isceon 122, is a fully halogenated chlorofluorocarbon (CFC-12) with the molecular formula CCl2F2. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified as a solvent and carrier compound within industrial chemical supply chains.

Historically, CFC-12 served as a propellant and solvent in aerosol formulations for automotive and aerospace maintenance products, where its low boiling point enabled consistent spray delivery and rapid evaporation from treated surfaces. In aerospace and defense contexts, it functioned as a carrier solvent in precision cleaning and surface preparation processes, dissolving contaminants without leaving residue.

Supply of CFC-12 in Europe is subject to strict controls under EC Regulation 1005/2009 on ozone-depleting substances, which prohibits most production and use. Procurement is therefore limited to recovered, reclaimed, or recycled grades for specific authorized applications, and buyers must demonstrate compliance with applicable REACH obligations and national licensing requirements.
