Description
Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) is an organic peroxide commonly supplied under trade names including Di-Cup and Cumene peroxide. It belongs to the diaryl peroxide class and functions as a free-radical generator upon thermal decomposition, releasing cumyloxy radicals at elevated temperatures.
In rubber and polymer processing, DCP initiates cross-linking by abstracting hydrogen atoms from polymer chains, forming covalent carbon-carbon bonds that improve mechanical strength and heat resistance. It is used in silicone rubber vulcanisation, polyethylene cross-linking for cable insulation, and as a cure agent in EPDM compounds for automotive seals and profiles.
DCP is available in technical and polymer grades, typically as a powder or granule with defined active oxygen content, and in masterbatch form for easier handling. It is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU and classified under ADR transport regulations as a Class 5.2 organic peroxide. Packaging formats commonly include fibre drums and temperature-controlled shipments.
