Diethyl oxalate

Diethyl oxalate (CAS 95-92-1), also known as ethyl oxalate or diethyl ethanedioate, is the diethyl ester of oxalic acid with molecular formula C6H10O4. It carries no assigned E-code and is classified under organic acids. It is commercially available under the synonyms oxalic acid diethyl ester and DIETHYL ETHANEDIOATE.

In pharmaceutical synthesis, diethyl oxalate serves as a reactive building block for condensation reactions, introducing the oxalyl group into active pharmaceutical intermediates. As a flavoring agent in food applications, it contributes fruity, rum-like notes at controlled concentrations. In catalytic processes, it acts as an oxalylating agent, facilitating ester-exchange reactions under mild conditions.
