Dimethylformamide

Dimethylformamide (CAS 68-12-2), commonly abbreviated as DMF or DMFA, is a water-miscible polar aprotic solvent with the molecular formula C3H7NO. It carries no assigned E-code and is also referenced under identifiers such as FORMDIMETHYLAMIDE and AKOS BBS-00004259. It is classified under HS code 29241990.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, DMF dissolves active pharmaceutical ingredients and polymer membranes during controlled-release coating processes, enabling uniform film formation. In electronics, it strips photoresist layers from circuit boards by penetrating and swelling the resin matrix without attacking the underlying substrate. It also serves as a reaction medium in synthetic fiber production, where it dissolves polyacrylonitrile for wet-spinning into acrylic textiles.

DMF is supplied as a clear colorless liquid in standard industrial grades compliant with REACH registration requirements applicable within the EU. Procurement should account for its classification as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) under REACH Annex XVII restrictions.
