Description

Dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) is a bifunctional organic acid with CAS 4767-03-7, commercially known under the registered trade name DMPA. It carries both hydroxyl and carboxylic acid groups on the same molecule, giving it a dual-reactive structure that underpins its utility across polymer chemistry and personal care formulation.

In waterborne polyurethane dispersions, DMPA acts as an internal emulsifier by introducing ionizable carboxylate groups into the polymer backbone, eliminating the need for external surfactants. In crosslinked coatings and adhesives, its hydroxyl groups react with isocyanates or melamines to build network density and improve film hardness and chemical resistance.

DMPA is supplied as a white crystalline powder compliant with REACH registration requirements for the European market. It carries no E-code designation and is not listed under Ph.Eur. or FCC monographs. Standard commercial packaging includes 25 kg bags, with bulk options available depending on supplier agreements.
