Description

Dioctyl maleate (DOM), also known as di-2-ethylhexyl maleate or bis(2-ethylhexyl) maleate, is an unsaturated diester produced by esterifying maleic acid with 2-ethylhexanol. It carries no E-code designation and is registered under CAS 142-16-5 and EC 205-524-5.

In polymer and coatings production, DOM functions as a reactive plasticizer and comonomer: its maleate double bond participates directly in free-radical polymerization, allowing it to become chemically bound into the polymer matrix rather than migrating over time. In adhesive and sealant formulations it also acts as a reactive diluent, reducing viscosity while contributing to crosslink density upon cure.
