Description

DL-Menthol (CAS 1490-04-6, EC 216-074-4) is the racemic form of menthol, a cyclic alcohol derived from mint oils or produced synthetically. It is also known by the trade names FEMA 2665 and p-Menthan-3-ol, and carries the synonym Hexahydrothymol. Unlike the naturally occurring L-form, DL-menthol contains equal proportions of both enantiomers.

In oral care and confectionery formulations, DL-menthol delivers a cooling sensation by activating TRPM8 cold receptors in the skin and mucous membranes, independent of any actual temperature change. In pharmaceutical topical preparations, this same receptor mechanism provides mild analgesic and counter-irritant effects. It also functions as a flavoring agent in food and beverage applications, where it contributes characteristic mint character at controlled use levels.

DL-Menthol is available in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade forms, with compliance to FCC and Ph.Eur. monographs depending on grade. It falls under REACH registration requirements within the EU. HS code 29061100 applies for import and export classification.
