DMDM hydantoin (CAS 6440-58-0) is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative used in personal care and industrial formulations. Also known by the trade name Dantoin DMDMH 55, it belongs to the heterocyclic hydantoin class and carries no assigned E-code. Its molecular formula is C7H12N2O4.
In cosmetic formulations such as shampoos and lotions, DMDM hydantoin inhibits microbial growth by releasing controlled levels of formaldehyde, disrupting bacterial and fungal cell function. In coatings and adhesive systems, it serves as a preservation agent during storage, preventing spoilage of water-based products without compromising film-forming properties.
