Dodecyldimethylamine oxide

Dodecyldimethylamine oxide, also known as DDAO, DDNO, LADO, or refan (CAS 1643-20-5), is a tertiary amine oxide surfactant with the molecular formula C14H31NO. It carries no assigned E-code. At neutral to alkaline pH it behaves as a nonionic surfactant, switching to cationic character under acidic conditions.

In personal care formulations, DDAO functions as a foam booster and hair conditioner by reducing interfacial tension and depositing a conditioning film on the hair shaft. In industrial cleaning and coatings applications, it acts as an emulsifier and degreaser, stabilising oil-in-water dispersions and improving substrate wetting. It also serves as a heat stabiliser in polymer systems.

DDAO is supplied as a clear yellow liquid, typically in aqueous solution at 30% active content, and is available in IBC and drum formats. The substance is registered under REACH and complies with relevant EU cosmetic regulations. No FCC or Ph.Eur. monograph applies.
