Ectoine

Ectoine (CAS 96702-03-3, EC 431-910-1) is a naturally occurring cyclic amino acid derivative produced by halophilic bacteria as a stress-protection mechanism. It is commercially available under trade names including RonaCare Ectoin and is also referred to as L-ectoine or THP[B] in technical literature. No E-code designation applies.

In personal care formulations, ectoine functions as a humectant by forming a structured hydration shell around proteins and cell membranes, reducing transepidermal water loss and supporting skin barrier integrity. In biotechnology applications, it stabilises enzymes, nucleic acids, and live cell cultures against thermal and osmotic stress, extending shelf life and process reliability.

Ectoine is supplied as a solid and is subject to REACH registration requirements for EU market access.
