EDTA

EDTA (CAS 60-00-4), also known as Edathamil, Celon A, and EDTA Acid, is a synthetic aminopolycarboxylic acid with the molecular formula C10H16N2O8. It carries no E-code designation but is registered under EC number 200-449-4 and is commercially available under several trade names across industrial and regulated markets.

In water treatment, EDTA sequesters calcium, magnesium, and heavy metal ions by forming stable, soluble complexes, preventing scale formation and equipment fouling. In personal care formulations, it functions as a chelating preservative booster, binding trace metals that would otherwise catalyse oxidative degradation of active ingredients and reduce antimicrobial efficacy.

EDTA is supplied in food-grade (FCC), pharmaceutical-grade (Ph.Eur.), and technical grades as a white crystalline powder or granulate.
