Description

Elastin (CAS 9007-58-3, EC 232-701-4) is a structural protein derived from animal connective tissue, commercially available under trade names including Elastapure and Elastin E60, and referenced by the E-code E 91. It is composed of cross-linked polypeptide chains that confer elastic recoil properties to biological matrices.

In personal care formulations, hydrolysed elastin peptides adsorb onto skin and hair surfaces, forming a film that reduces transepidermal water loss and improves surface flexibility. In pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications, elastin-based materials serve as biocompatible scaffolding components, where their self-assembling peptide sequences support cell adhesion and tissue engineering constructs.

Elastin is supplied as a powder, with grades available for cosmetic and pharmaceutical use, subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Procurement should confirm whether the grade meets relevant pharmacopoeial or cosmetic-grade purity specifications. Sourcing documentation should address animal origin declarations for regulatory compliance in target markets.
