Description

Ethanolamine thioglycolate (CAS 126-97-6), commonly abbreviated as MEATG, is the salt formed by combining ethanolamine with thioglycolic acid. It carries no assigned E-code. It is also referenced under the synonyms 2-hydroxyethylaminium thioglycolate and monoethanolamine thioglycolate in cosmetic ingredient documentation.

In permanent waving and hair relaxer formulations, MEATG breaks the disulfide bonds in keratin by acting as a reducing agent, allowing the hair fiber to be restructured before re-oxidation sets the new shape. It is also used in depilatory creams, where the same bond-cleaving mechanism degrades the protein structure of the hair shaft at the skin surface.

MEATG is supplied as a technical-grade clear liquid and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Procurement teams should confirm supplier SDS compliance and concentration specifications, as cosmetic applications are regulated under EC No 1223/2009. Standard packaging formats include drums and IBCs.
