Description
Ethylene dibromide (CAS 106-93-4, EC 203-444-5), also known by trade names Dowfume W-8, Bromofume, Soilfume, and Aadibroom, and abbreviated as DBE, is a brominated aliphatic compound produced by the addition of bromine to ethylene. It carries no assigned E-code.
In plastics and polymer manufacturing, ethylene dibromide functions as a flame retardant by releasing bromine radicals during combustion, interrupting the free-radical chain reactions that sustain burning. It has also been applied as a soil and grain fumigant, where its biocidal action disrupts cellular respiration in target organisms including nematodes and insects.
Ethylene dibromide is subject to REACH regulation and requires handling under strict occupational exposure controls given its classification as a suspected carcinogen. It is supplied as a liquid in drums or IBC containers. Procurement teams should confirm current import and use authorizations, as restrictions vary by jurisdiction within the EU.
