Description
Eugenol (CAS 97-53-0) is a naturally occurring phenolic compound extracted primarily from clove oil, also known by the synonyms 4-allylguaiacol and allyl guaiacol. It carries no assigned E-code but is recognised as a flavouring substance under EU Regulation 1334/2008 and appears on the FEMA GRAS list.
In food and beverage formulation, eugenol delivers characteristic clove and spice notes at concentrations typically below 10 ppm, acting simultaneously as a chain-breaking antioxidant by donating hydrogen atoms to free radicals. In personal care and pharmaceutical applications, it functions as a UV absorber and fragrance fixative, and is used in dental preparations for its analgesic and antimicrobial properties.
Eugenol is supplied in food-grade and cosmetic-grade forms compliant with FCC, Ph.Eur., and REACH regulations. Standard packaging includes drums and IBCs for bulk procurement. Buyers should note IFRA concentration guidelines apply for leave-on cosmetic applications.
