Description

Ferrous lactate, also known as iron(II) lactate or iron lactate (CAS 5905-52-2), is an iron salt of lactic acid. It carries no assigned E-number in the EU and is commercially available under several synonymous designations including iron(2+) lactate. It serves as a bioavailable source of divalent iron in regulated applications across food, pharmaceutical, and agricultural sectors.

In food and nutrition, ferrous lactate functions as an iron fortification agent, delivering Fe²⁺ in a form that supports gastrointestinal absorption more effectively than inorganic iron salts. In pharmaceutical formulations, it is used as an active ingredient in iron-deficiency preparations, where its organic salt structure reduces the oxidative irritation associated with ferric compounds. It also serves as a micronutrient source in animal feed applications.

Ferrous lactate is supplied in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade forms, with quality benchmarks referenced against FCC and Ph.Eur. monographs where applicable. It falls under REACH registration obligations for EU suppliers. Typical packaging includes fiber drums and multi-layer bags suited to its deliquescent, light-sensitive nature.
