Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate

Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate (CAS 7782-63-0) is an inorganic iron salt commercially known as copperas, green vitriol, and iron vitriol. It carries no E-number designation and is distinct from ferric (Fe³⁺) compounds, functioning as a divalent iron source across industrial and agricultural applications.

In water treatment, it acts as a coagulant and flocculant by reacting with alkalinity to precipitate suspended solids and phosphates. In agriculture, it corrects iron-deficient soils and suppresses moss growth through direct phytotoxic action. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as an iron source in haematinic formulations where controlled bioavailability is required.

The material is available in technical, agricultural, and Ph.Eur.-compliant pharmaceutical grades, with FCC-grade material available for food-contact adjacent applications. It is fully registered under REACH. Standard packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk quantities, with solution form available depending on supplier specification.
