Description

Formamide (CAS 75-12-7, EC 200-842-0) is a simple amide compound with the molecular formula CH3NO, also known under the names Methanamide, Formic Amide, and Amide C1. It carries no assigned E-code. It is registered under REACH and subject to classification as a reproductive toxicant (Category 1B).

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, formamide serves as a polar aprotic-adjacent solvent that dissolves a broad range of organic and inorganic compounds, facilitating synthesis and purification steps. In electronics, it functions as a solvent carrier in the production of polyimide films and electrolytic capacitor electrolytes, where its high dielectric constant supports charge transfer. It also acts as a plasticizer in paper and textile processing, reducing fiber brittleness.

Formamide is supplied in technical and high-purity grades to meet pharmaceutical and industrial specifications. It is available in standard drum and IBC packaging formats. Procurement should account for its SVHC candidate status under REACH, which may impose documentation and notification obligations depending on application and jurisdiction.
