Guanine

Guanine (CAS 73-40-5, EC 200-799-8, formula C5H5N5O) is a naturally occurring purine base found in nucleic acids, commercially known under the names Pearl Essence and C.I. 75170. It carries no assigned E-code and is categorised within nucleosides and nucleotides.

In personal care formulations, guanine functions as a colorant by reflecting light from its crystalline platelet structure, producing the iridescent effect in cosmetic products such as nail polishes and highlighters.
