Description

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a brominated cycloaliphatic flame retardant with CAS 3194-55-6, supplied under trade names including FR 1206, SR 104, YM 88A, HBCD HT, and FR 1206HT. It carries EC number 221-695-9 and belongs to the additive flame retardant class, functioning without chemical bonding to the polymer matrix.

HBCD is applied primarily in expanded and extruded polystyrene insulation boards, where it interrupts combustion by releasing bromine radicals that quench flame propagation in the gas phase. It is also used in textile back-coatings and electronic housings to meet fire performance standards such as UL 94 and EN 13501.

HBCD is subject to REACH restriction under Annex XVII and is listed as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC), requiring documented compliance before procurement. Buyers should confirm authorization status and end-use exemptions applicable in their jurisdiction prior to ordering. Supply is available in crystalline powder form under controlled documentation.
