Hexamethylenetetramine

Hexamethylenetetramine (CAS 100-97-0), also known commercially as Uritone, Cystogen, Ammoform, Hexaform, and Formamine, is a synthetic heterocyclic compound produced by the condensation of formaldehyde and ammonia. It serves as a controlled source of formaldehyde under acidic or thermal conditions, making it reactive across a range of industrial processes.

In rubber vulcanisation, hexamethylenetetramine acts as a methylene donor, cross-linking polymer chains to improve mechanical strength and heat resistance. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it functions as a urinary antiseptic by releasing formaldehyde in acidic urine, inhibiting bacterial growth. It also serves as a curing agent and hardener in phenolic resin systems used in moulding compounds.

Hexamethylenetetramine is available in technical and pharmaceutical grades, with the Ph.Eur. grade meeting European pharmacopoeial standards for medicinal applications. It is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Typical packaging includes 25 kg bags and bulk quantities for industrial procurement.
