Hexyl d-glucoside

Hexyl D-glucoside (CAS 54549-24-5, EC 259-217-6), also referred to as hexyl D-glucopyranoside or n-hexyl D-glucopyranoside, is a non-ionic alkyl glucoside surfactant formed by linking a six-carbon hexyl chain to a glucose unit. It carries no assigned E-code and is not classified as a food additive.

In personal care formulations, it functions as an emulsifier by reducing interfacial tension between oil and water phases, stabilising emulsions without ionic charge. In cleaning applications, the hexyl chain provides moderate degreasing action against lipophilic soils, while the glucose head group supports mildness and biodegradability. It also serves as a solubiliser and carrier for active ingredients in leave-on and rinse-off systems.

Hexyl D-glucoside is supplied as a research and specialty-grade material and falls under REACH registration obligations for quantities above one tonne per year. Procurement teams should confirm supplier documentation including SDS, certificate of analysis, and origin declaration prior to sourcing.
