Description

Homosalate (CAS 118-56-9) is an organic UV-filtering compound used in sun care and cosmetic formulations. It is sold under trade names including Kemester, Heliopan, and Filtrosol A, and carries no assigned E-code. It absorbs UVB radiation in the 295–315 nm range.

In sunscreen formulations, homosalate functions by absorbing UVB photons and dissipating the energy as heat, preventing skin penetration. It is also used as a carrier solvent for other UV filters such as avobenzone, improving their solubility and distribution within emulsion systems. Pharmaceutical topical products use it for comparable photoprotective purposes.

Homosalate is supplied as a neat liquid and is subject to REACH registration requirements within the EU. Concentration limits in cosmetic products are regulated under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, currently capped at 7.34%. Packaging is typically available in drums and IBCs for bulk procurement.
