Description
Hydrochloric acid (CAS 7647-01-0) is a strong inorganic acid produced by dissolving hydrogen chloride gas in water. It is also known as muriatic acid or chloridric acid, and trades under names such as Enplate PO 236. No E-code applies to its industrial grades.
In metal processing, hydrochloric acid removes iron oxides and mill scale from steel surfaces through direct acid-metal reaction, preparing them for galvanising or coating. In water treatment, it lowers alkalinity by neutralising carbonate and bicarbonate ions, bringing process water to target pH ranges required for downstream operations.
Hydrochloric acid is available in technical, industrial, and food-grade qualities, with food-grade material conforming to FCC and Ph.Eur. specifications. It is subject to REACH registration and classified as a substance of concern under CLP. Supply is typically in bulk tankers, IBCs, or carboys depending on concentration and volume requirements.
