Description

Hydrogenated Lecithin (CAS 92128-87-5) is a phospholipid mixture derived from lecithin through catalytic hydrogenation, which saturates the fatty acid chains and raises the melting point. It is commonly abbreviated as HSPC and supplied under grade designations including HSPC-25A, HSPC-50A, HSPC-70A, and HSPC-90A, reflecting varying phosphatidylcholine content.

In pharmaceutical liposome formulations, Hydrogenated Lecithin forms stable bilayer membranes that encapsulate active compounds, improving controlled-release performance compared to unsaturated lecithins. In cosmetic emulsions, it functions as a lamellar emulsifier that organises water and oil phases into structured layers, enhancing skin feel and moisture retention. Food-grade applications include stabilising fat-based systems where oxidative stability is a formulation requirement.

Hydrogenated Lecithin is available in multiple phosphatidylcholine-standardised grades as a powder and is subject to REACH registration within the EU. Pharmaceutical grades are produced in compliance with Ph.Eur. monograph standards. Sourcing should confirm whether the origin is soy or egg, as this affects allergen labelling obligations under EU food and cosmetic regulations.
