In polyester and alkyd resin synthesis, the compound acts as a chain-building monomer, where its dual functionality enables controlled branching and crosslink density, directly influencing resin hardness and flexibility. It also serves as a plasticizer intermediate and is used in pharmaceutical synthesis as a chiral building block or protecting-group precursor.
