Description

Iron Oxide Black (CAS 12227-89-3) is a synthetic inorganic pigment also identified as C.I. 77499, Black Oxide, and Mapico Black. Approved as E172(i) in the EU, it belongs to the iron oxide family and delivers deep black coloration through its mixed ferrous-ferric oxide composition.

In coatings and construction materials, it provides UV-stable pigmentation and contributes to surface wetting, enabling uniform dispersion in binder systems. In plastics and automotive applications, it is compounded directly into polymer matrices to achieve consistent black coloration with strong heat resistance and chemical stability.

Iron Oxide Black is available in pigment-grade powder and food-grade formats compliant with E172(i) specifications and FCC standards. It falls under REACH regulation and requires a Safety Data Sheet for EU trade. Packaging typically follows standard industrial formats; food and cosmetic grades are supplied under stricter purity controls.
