Description

Iron oxide (CAS 1332-37-2, EC 215-570-8) is an inorganic mineral pigment commercially available under trade designations including BUS, NAT, RING3, MIO-KS, and MIO 2F. It encompasses a range of iron-oxygen compounds that deliver colour and opacity across red, yellow, black, and brown tones depending on crystal structure and particle morphology.

In architectural coatings and construction materials such as concrete and paving, iron oxide pigments provide UV-stable colouration by absorbing specific wavelengths without photodegradation. In automotive and industrial coatings, micaceous iron oxide grades (MIO) form lamellar barrier layers that reduce moisture and oxygen diffusion through the film, extending corrosion protection.

Iron oxide is supplied in synthetic and natural grades, with synthetic grades offering tighter particle size distribution and higher colour consistency. It is subject to REACH registration and is available in powder and granular forms. Buyers should confirm grade suitability against relevant industry standards for their specific application.
