Isobutane

Isobutane (CAS 75-28-5) is a saturated hydrocarbon supplied under the designations R600a, A 31, and E943b. Approved as a food-grade propellant and packaging gas under EC regulation, it is handled as a liquefied gas under pressure or as a cryogenic liquid in bulk applications.

In refrigeration, isobutane serves as the primary working fluid in domestic and light commercial systems, transferring heat through repeated compression and expansion cycles. As a propellant in aerosol formulations, it delivers controlled pressure to dispense product without reacting with the active ingredients. It also functions as a process solvent in hydrocarbon extraction operations within the oil and gas sector.

Isobutane is available in food-grade (E943b, FCC-compliant) and technical grades, both subject to REACH registration requirements.
